Once, we used to think Americans were the most exotic creatures on the planet. For my sins, I recall getting very excited as a teenager at a disco in my home town because there were some ‘American girls in’ and we’d never set eyes on one before, let alone spoken to one. Needless to say, our pathetic attempts at enticement came to nought.
